Versant Power to begin work on Route 1A in Dedham/Ellsworth

Release Date:  03-31-2022

Bangor, Maine — Beginning in early April, Versant Power crews will rebuild a 6-mile section of a transmission line that is in poor condition and reaching end of life.  One section of the line will be rebuilt roadside alongside Route 1A in the Dedham and Ellsworth area.

“The roadside portion of work along Route 1A will begin April 4 and is expected to be completed in mid-June,” said Paul Miller, Vice President, Engineering and Operations, at Versant Power. “We ask motorists to be aware of workers on Route 1A this spring and slow down in work zones for everyone’s safety. “

A detailed traffic control plan has been prepared with the Maine Department of Transportation and Maine State Police will help with traffic control. Wide loads will be temporarily restricted while work is completed.

Work on the project includes removing a section of line that is currently located mostly in wetlands and moving it to a better area within an existing nearby right-of-way.  The project is part of long-term reliability improvement effort that began in 2018 and includes rebuilding most of the old line, which is 23 miles long and runs from Veazie to Ellsworth. Some equipment on the line dates back to the 1930s and must be replaced rather than repaired.

The upcoming line work in the Dedham and Ellsworth area is the last major phase of the project that needs to be done before the long-term project is completed in 2023.
