Versant Power energizes new substation in Tremont
Tremont, ME— After a year of work, customers located on the Tremont and Southwest Harbor end of Mount Desert Island should now experience more reliable service with the addition of a new substation and equipment. The new substation feeds power to two local circuits, one feeding Bass Harbor and the other feeding the Tremont area, including Swans Island and Frenchboro. Upgrades to equipment along both lines connected to the substation will improve service to over 2,000 Versant Power customers.

“New, modern equipment has been installed in Tremont to replace equipment that’s reached the end of its useful life,” said Versant Power Project Manager Buddy Greenlaw, “We’ve also added remotely operated devices that can identify issues faster and minimize the number of customers impacted if there’s an outage.”
Old equipment failure in the area has caused outages in recent years and required emergency repairs. With that aged equipment removed and the addition of more resilient, contemporary versions, customers can expect more dependable service.

Previously, no substation existed in Tremont, and the area was served from a Southwest Harbor line. That line from Southwest Harbor now feeds into the Tremont substation, where a new transformer will provide improved service for many years to come. The new substation has been designed to accommodate future development. It also provides a site for Versant Power's mobile substation to be used when equipment needs servicing or if emergency repairs are needed.
Additional improvements to the substation are planned for the new year. This project is part of a multi-year plan to improve reliability in the Southwest Harbor area. For more Versant Power news, please visit versantpower.com
