Lamoine and Mount Desert Island, ME- Osprey pairs that nest on Versant Power’s Lamoine and Mount Desert Island nesting platforms have returned and are available for 24/7 viewing at versantpower.com/osprey .
Solar-powered osprey cameras allow you to watch the ospreys as they build their nests, lay eggs, and care for their chicks. The Lamoine and MDI alternate nesting platforms are two of more than 25 created to deter ospreys from building nests on electrical infrastructure.
“We look forward to this time of the year when the ospreys return to Lamoine, MDI and all the other platforms in our service territory” said Logan MacDonald, Environmental Supervisor at Versant Power. “The ospreys will lay their eggs in May, their chicks will hatch in June, and then they will migrate south in August and September.”
The platforms were built with ospreys’ preferences in mind and required Versant’s environmental team as well as the expertise of outside environmental groups, including the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Because ospreys like to be at the tallest point above the water, Versant crews replaced existing utility poles with taller ones. Crews installed square platforms with no coverings, as experts tell us the birds prefer to look down and hunt for fish below without any obstructions overhead.
If you know an area where ospreys have been seen attempting to nest on utility infrastructure, you can report it by filling out the form at the bottom of the Osprey Cam page on our website. This will help us keep the birds safe.

Ospreys are federally protected birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Versant Power worked closely with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife on this project. The intent of the osprey camera is solely to allow the public to observe the birds and Versant Power does not intervene in the natural processes of osprey nesting. |
