Versant Power statement on Old Town/Orono area outages

Release Date:  08-18-2020

We’re reaching out to share information about recent outages in the Old Town/Orono area. While the outages that occurred did not involve Versant Power vehicles or equipment and were beyond our immediate control, we understand that these outages are a hassle or worse for our customers. We also want to give you some insight into how we are working to prevent these occurrences as much as possible while minimizing the number of customers affected when damage does occur.

Our investigations link an occurrence last week to contact by heavy equipment operating near power lines, and two additional occurrences this week to car-pole accidents.

We are actively working on projects to improve protection and coordination equipment in the area. We’re also planning to replace lines with stronger, covered wire in the area to help prevent trees and branches from causing outages.

We regret that our customers in the Old Town/Orono area have experienced multiple outages and we will continue to pursue projects to improve their service. As always, we’d also like to remind customers to never approach a downed power line or drive over it, and we ask those operating vehicles or heavy equipment near power lines to use caution to keep themselves and others safe.
